Many public schools around the island of Maui yesterday celebrated the month of May and the end of the school year with school-wide festivities. At my daughter’s elementary school, Pu’u Kukui Elementary, they call the festivities Ho’ike. Each grade level rehearsed dancing for weeks to a special song. On the day of the Ho’ike celebration, parents, grandparents, siblings and more filled the school’s central lawn to watch the various daonces. Some schools called the celebration May Day. Here are a few photos from the Pu’u Kukui Elementary School Ho’ike.
